What is HEIC and why does your iPhone use it?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format on iPhones since iOS 11 and on all modern iPads. Apple adopted HEIC because it produces files roughly 50% smaller than JPEG at the same image quality. A 12 MP photo that would be 4 MB as JPEG is only about 2 MB as HEIC. This saves significant storage on your device. The problem is that HEIC is not universally supported — Windows PCs, most websites, government portals, social media upload forms, and many Android devices cannot open HEIC files directly.

When do you need to convert HEIC to JPG?

You need to convert when uploading photos to government exam portals (SSC, UPSC, IBPS — all require JPEG). When sending photos to someone using a Windows computer or older Android phone. When uploading to websites or forms that only accept JPG or PNG. When printing photos at a photo studio — most print shops accept only JPEG. When attaching photos to email where the recipient may not be able to view HEIC. When editing in older photo editors like Photoshop CS6 or Paint.

Method 1: Convert using Picly (no upload, 100% private)

Open Picly → Tools → HEIC to JPG. Select one or multiple HEIC files from your device. Picly converts them entirely inside your browser — your photos never leave your device and are never uploaded to any server. Click "Convert to JPG" and download the converted files. If you have multiple files, you can download them all as a single ZIP file. Picly also supports HEIC to PNG and HEIC to WebP conversions.

Method 2: Change iPhone settings to shoot in JPEG

If you want to avoid HEIC entirely, you can change your iPhone camera settings. Go to Settings → Camera → Formats → Select "Most Compatible." This switches your camera to shoot in JPEG instead of HEIC. The downside is that your photos will take up roughly twice the storage space. You can also set your iPhone to automatically convert to JPEG when sharing — go to Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC → Select "Automatic." This converts HEIC to JPEG when you share via AirDrop, email, or USB.

Method 3: Convert on Windows

Windows 10 and 11 can open HEIC files if you install the "HEIF Image Extensions" from the Microsoft Store (free) and the "HEVC Video Extensions" (paid, Rs 50). After installing, you can open HEIC files in Photos and save as JPEG using "Save As." Alternatively, use Picly in your browser — no installation needed, no payment required.

HEIC vs JPG vs PNG vs WebP: which format to use?

JPEG (JPG) is the most widely supported format — use it whenever compatibility matters. It supports lossy compression, which means files are small but some quality is lost. Best for photographs. PNG is lossless — no quality loss, but files are 3–5x larger than JPEG. Best for screenshots, logos, and images with text. WebP is Google's modern format — 25–35% smaller than JPEG at the same quality, supported by all modern browsers. Best for websites. HEIC is Apple's format — 50% smaller than JPEG, but limited support outside Apple devices. Only useful on iPhones and iPads.

Batch conversion: converting multiple HEIC files at once

If you have dozens or hundreds of HEIC photos to convert, Picly supports batch conversion. Select all your HEIC files at once using the multi-file picker. Picly processes them one by one in your browser and shows progress for each file. When all conversions are complete, click "Download all as ZIP" to get a single ZIP file containing all your converted JPGs. This is especially useful when transferring vacation photos from iPhone to a Windows computer or when preparing multiple photos for a government application.

Does conversion reduce quality?

Converting HEIC to JPG does involve a re-encoding step, which means there is a small quality loss. However, Picly uses high-quality encoding (92% quality by default) that produces output visually indistinguishable from the original. The file size will typically increase slightly — a 2 MB HEIC file becomes roughly 3–4 MB as JPEG — because JPEG is less efficient than HEIC. If you need smaller files, use Picly's Image Compressor after converting to hit exact KB targets.
